The semimembranosus is a flat, deep hamstring muscle on the posteromedial thigh, originating at the ischial tuberosity ("sitting bone") and inserting on the tibia. It extends the hip, flexes the knee, and medially rotates the tibia. Injuries usually stem from overuse, causing chronic pain at the back of the inner knee.
